FOSTER HOME URGENTLY NEEDED FOR FUDGE, 2 YEAR OLD GREYHOUND X Fudge is the most loving and adorable boy anyone could wish for - his only problem is that he does not like other dogs. This is because he was attacked by another dog when he was a small puppy and he's never forgotten it. Fudge is such a people dog, and kennel life is getting him down. He has become so depressed seeing our other rescues come and go, when he is always passed by. Now he just looks out sucking his blanket for comfort. However much we care for him, we can't compensate for a loving home, and our hearts go out to him. His sad eyes, still full of hope that one day he will be chosen, and the 'reserved' sign will at long last be on his kennel door - but after being at HH for a year, he has had no luck! Fudge needs a home environment where his life can begin again, so until that day comes a foster home would be good. HH will give every support if Fudge can be given a chance of happiness once more. If anyone can help, please, please contact Holly Hedge. |

The Farcical Dangerous Dogs Act The law regarding the Dangerous Dogs Act is a complete farce. When so-called Pit Bulls and Pit Bull Types are persecuted and destroyed, for their appearance alone, not because they are aggressive or have done anything wrong, except be bred for all the wrong reasons by dysfunctional, avaricious breeders of misery, who only care about the money they can make - often to top up their Social Security, and the bonus is - it is tax free!! Who cares, certainly not the powers that be! The government appears to be oblivious that millions of pounds of tax payers money is spent on seizing these poor, maligned victims of society, who can spend up to two years incarcerated in kennels only to receive a death sentence at the end of it. Instead of the powers that be (who I am beginning to believe are also dysfunctional), getting to the source of the problem, namely the above-the- law breeders and dregs of society, who get away with murder, and make a lot of money out of it. It would appear that mass destruction of anything resembling a Pit Bull Terrier is the easy way out – well in reality if the breeding isn't stopped, and the breeders prosecuted and sentenced accordingly, this vicious circle will continue, and innocent victims who have the misfortune to be born with the wrong shaped head, or leg measurements, or whatever else will deem them to be under the Dangerous Dogs Act, will be under the threat of death. So what's the answer? It really isn't rocket science – STOP THE BREEDING & MAKE THE HUMAN RACE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN ACTIONS! THESE POOR DOGS DIDN'T ASK TO BE BORN. |
| Stanley's Story On Wednesday, 10th August a dear little Jack Russell x was brought into reception by a concerned gentleman who found him by the Pavillion car park on the A38. The poor little mite was emaciated, dehydrated covered in sores and live maggots, and was in total shut down mode. Staff immediately showered him off to remove the maggots and wrapped him in a warm towel to dry him off before taking him to the vet. When the towel was unfolded there were loads more maggots, some still crawling out from the wound in his side - it was awful. We took him straight to Vale Vets at Portishead, who confirmed he was also anaemic, had a low temperature, and was very poorly. We were worried the maggots might have eaten into his internal organs, as Richard Bragg the vet said if this was the case they wouldn't be able to save him. We left him in capable hands to do everything they could for him. He stayed at the vets for 2 nights, then this morning we got a call to say he was much brighter, eating well, and was ready to be collected. We were all so pleased, and so grateful to Sean, the kind gentleman who took the trouble to bring him in regardless of him crawling in maggots. Had he not done so he would have surely died. The RSPCA have been informed and are investigating. Photo's to follow. Stanley is now in a foster home and recovering well. |

ANNIE A lady rang Holly Hedge at 2pm on Wednesday, 27th December saying her son and his girlfriend had picked up a dog in a very poor state at Cribbs Causeway, Bristol, with pus oozing out all over her body. She was seen wandering in the road, and was almost run over. We immediately went out and collected her and took her to Vale Vets in Portishead as she was in a state of collapse, and unable to open her eyes. The awful smell from her infected skin was overpowering. She was kept at the vets overnight as she was so poorly. The vet said she was at least 6 kilograms underweight, and the reason she couldn’t open her eyes was because they were so badly infected. Her left eye is so badly ulcerated it will have to be removed, probably due to entropian left untreated for a very long time. This is an inrolling of the edge of the eyelid so that the lashes and hairs rub against the surface of the eye causing irritation, scarring and inflammation of the eyeball. This is extremely painful, uncomfortable and debilitating. Her right eye is also ulcerated but there is a good chance of the eye being saved by an operation which returns the lid margin to its normal position. A blood test confirmed she had a yeast and bacterial infection - her skin is red raw, and her paws very swollen and infected. All in all a very neglected and sad little dog. Annie, as the vet nurses named her, also has to have Malaseb baths daily to help heal her inflamed and broken skin. She is on painkillers, eye drops, and antibiotics and needs 5 meals a day. Right now all she wants to do is sleep and drink lots of water – she looks so pitiful. In about 6 to 8 weeks time, once Annie has gained weight and is feeling better in herself she will have to have her right eye removed. A few weeks after that she will need her left eye operated on in the hope it will be saved and she will be able to open her eye and be able to see without being in pain. Annie is a young dog and deserves the chance to live a normal, happy life. Whatever happens Annie will get that chance, but we are looking at almost £3,000 in vets fees which will be crippling for the Charity. Any donations to help this poor little mite would be truly appreciated – however small, every penny counts. Also if anyone recognises Annie by her photograph please ring Holly Hedge on 01275-474719. The RSPCA have been informed. We sincerely hope that once all her ordeals are over, we can find her the loving home she deserves. Please feel free to ring or e-mail me if you want any more info. Many thanks Pauline Leeson Founder, Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary. ***Update*** GOOD NEWS! Annie has had both her operations today, and will be going home later. The vet said she was doing so well both her operations could be performed on the same day. So, bless her little heart she is minus one eye, and the other has stitches in, but after a few days Annie will be feeling so much better. She is in less pain now than she was before her operations, and on the road to a full recovery. Her skin problems are still ongoing, and Annie will need to be spayed in the near future, but not until she is 100% well. Thank you to everyone who donated towards making Annie's life comfortable and pain free, and giving her the chance to see properly out of her remaining eye. |
| THE PLIGHT OF SO MANY UNWANTED CATS AND KITTENS Holly Hedge have 66 kittens and 29 adult cats looking for caring, responsible owners. This year has been one of the worst so far, with stray pregnant cats being brought to Holly Hedge from early March. Some have come in very underweight and needing veterinary treatment, but at least their babies have been born where their mums have all the TLC they need to bring up their kittens in a safe and caring environment. One thing's for sure, all mums will be spayed before they go to their new homes to prevent more unwanted kittens. Today we had a call about another stray cat who turned up heavily pregnant in someone's garden and had 4 kittens 6 weeks ago. She is now pregnant again! We are taking her in tomorrow. We have received so many calls from public reporting stray mums and kittens, some crying at people's doors desperate for food. We never turn away pregnant or nursing mums as they are so vulnerable. This year we have had to ask for foster homes to accommodate these poor little mites until Holly Hedge has had the space to take them in. If they are left to fend for themselves, they are at risk of being killed by predators (including the human variety)! Also this is how feral colonies come about, and so the vicious circle continues. Kittens who are not old enough to be weaned have been found dumped and half dead, some too far gone to be saved. Recently an emaciated little cat was brought in covered in maggots, and was nuzzling staff and purring, so pleased to be in safe hands. She was taken straight to our vet who could do nothing for her as the maggots had eaten in to her internal organs – she was put to sleep, and it was heartbreaking. Only a few weeks ago we had a little dog brought into us, also emaciated and crawling with maggots. Luckily he survived and is now thriving in his new home. Most of our 'tails' have happy endings, but there are those that are sometimes beyond help, and that is hard to come to terms with. But right now we are looking for loving homes for 95 cats and kittens, and 35 dogs and puppies, and have a waiting list of over 100 animals needing help. Foster homes are also desperately needed for dogs and cats, who are finding it stressful being in a kennel/cattery situation, especially if they are elderly. If anyone can offer a loving home, or can foster on a temporary basis please contact Holly Hedge on 01275-474719 or email info@hollyhedge.org.uk |

IN PRAISE OF GREYHOUNDS If you have always wanted a dog but are worried that you may not have the time or energy for one consider a greyhound! Often overlooked because of their long legs and thin bodies greyhounds are very easy to own—they are the closest thing in the doggy world to a “couch potato”. It is a myth that greyhounds need loads of exercise—a good run twice a day is quite sufficient. In between they are content to laze around and enjoy comfortable surroundings. For many of them their early lives have been miserable, neglected and shut away in the confines of a dark, dismal kennel with little or no bedding, discarded when they are no longer of use. We have several greyhounds or greyhound X’s longing to be chosen and they are all truly deserving cases. They are all sweet natured and loving and make gentle and loyal pets. They reward their owners with love, loyalty and affection, not to mention company whilst watching your favourite TV programmes. |
| If you would like to be contacted about future fundraising events please e-mail us info@hollyhedge.org.uk and we will add you to our e-mail mailing list. Thank you | |
