Esme Berni was a great animal lover. She loved all animals and donated to 29 different cat, dog, small animal and wildlife charities, including Holly Hedge – ensuring that animals from all walks of life would be cared for and given the chance of a new beginning. Even when Esme became seriously ill she managed to still venture out into her garden to feed the birds and other garden wildlife.
Esme made it possible for our charity to purchase the site at Barrow Gurney in 1992 through a generous financial gift. She took a very keen interest in the work of our charity and the animals that we cared for. We became her most loved charity, which truly was a great honour.
Esme's lasting gift to Holly Hedge was of her legacy, enabling us to knock down old dilapidated buildings, and to extend and build new ones. Her kind gift still benefits hundreds of animals every year – it really was a heartfelt gift of love.
Esme put her faith in us, and we will always do our best to live up to all that this amazing woman has invested in Holly Hedge. She really is a guardian angel to Holly Hedge, and we hope she is looking down on us and feeling very proud. Her memory will live on through all the animals that she has enabled us to give shelter and the promise of a brighter future to.
The pressures of life today mean that not only are there more animals being given up but that new homes are harder to find. To find out more about re-homing an animal please click here.
